As for the the question in application 2 about: how you might use a blog in your classroom? I believe first I would use the blog to create conversation that may provoke participation in the classroom setting. In a Health class some student do not feel safe oral discussing their thoughts. I would assume with the amount of texting and internet use this may be a more productive activity for my students. Also, in my alternative high school this can be a place student will be able to post questions they may have about a subject and the student themselves can solve the problem before I have to step in. The would be able to collaborate at tall times during the day. I believe this blog would serve many purposes and some that may not even consider before the blog has taken off. Is it a place for students to interact about content? Yes, I believe the students will be able to rely on the blog to check for understanding and work together to learn from each other. This is very valuable for students and they can learn a lot from each other. Is it a showcase for their work? I don't think it would be a showcase of their work, just a place to bounce information off each other that they may not have the chance to in the classroom setting. How does using a blog enhance the lesson? It enhances the lesson because you can get background information from students before you even begin a unit. I believe I have fell in love with blogs due to the fact that we as educator can get information from students through the blogs. I teach 9th-12th graders Health and Alternative education. I am ready to begin my blog experience and take it into the classroom. What a very effective educational tool.
I can see where blogs would work in a health class. As you stated some students do not feel comfortable speaking out in class, especially on certain topics. Do you think that some students may take their discussions to far on some topics? How will you monitor the topics and information they are sending out? Reminding them to stay on the topic and that you are able to view everything they post may help keep them on task.
Yeah, I do think that some students will take topics to far. Health is a very touchy subject. I teach in an abstinence only school. I believe I would need to police the blog very tightly. I actually plan to use the blog to obtain prior knowledge for future units. In addition I plan to have other teacher be included in the blog. I think this would interesting. I definately will need run "tight ship" as far as the blog goes.
MY reaction to the Web site is a positive a refreshing thought to the why we are teaching our students. I may be alot different from many teachers, but I really like to see students develop and transition into the real-world. I think this article addresses these issues.
What information on the site surprised me was not much surprise at all. It seems that in the CTE program that I am in as a Health educator explains all these principles. In my district we as Career Technical Educator are striving to go in this direction. The biggest surprise to me is the static you get from other teachers. This makes total sense as this id the direction our staff is headed.
Did you disagree with anything on the site? Explain. I agreed with the article in whole. I can't pick out anything I do not agree with. Again, I think it has to do with the direction my district is headed. What are the implications for your students, and for you as a contemporary educator? We need to implement this idea as a whole staff. We are already getting static from teachers that our students will not go into this type of fields. We are in a 92% hispanic population and our vision is alot different then other districts. I disagree with this idea. ALL students should grow and prosper. The 21st century skills are a must for ALL students.
